Built like an amphitheatre on a hillside, with a strong island feel and traditional houses along the seafront. The most important summer resort in Arcadia, 45 km from Tripoli and 150 km from Athens.
The small peninsula the locals call “the island” gives the village its character, with the medieval castle on top and views down to the harbour.
On top of the hill, the Zafiropoulos castle is where Greek fighters repelled Ibrahim’s army in August 1826. On a clear day the view reaches Nafplio.
A few minutes west on the road to Tripoli, a 12th-century monastery with rare manuscripts and sculptures from the nearby villa of Herodes Atticus.
The coastal road south leads to two small towns known for their red climbing cliffs, the Tsakonian dialect and Leonidio’s PDO aubergine.
